» St. John's on a budget?
cross-posted in newfoundland, st.john's, nl_music, george_street....sorry if you're seeing this multiple times!

Hi all!

So I'm coming to visit Newfoundland, St. John's specifically, for the first time, at the end of November. I was wondering if anybody could give me some suggestions on some things to do, places to go, events to check out, etc. I'll be there from Wednesday, November 23rd through Sunday, November 27th. I know of the obvious stuff...George Street, Signal Hill, and such, but I was wondering if anybody had some additional suggestions, on a tight budget?

My main issue is that I won't have any wheels of my own...just my own 2 feet and whatever public transport or friends I can hook up with. But I'll be staying downtown, at City Hostel on Duckworth and...Preston Street I think, so I know Metrobus will be accessible to me at least. I would like to go to Cape Spear...is there any sort of transport to that area? Can I get to the Signal Hill area from downtown St. John's? I don't mind a bit of walking...I live in NYC, so I'm used to it.

As far as other stuff, I'm a musician and an actress, and a HUGE fan of traditional Newfoundland music, so I definitely want to look into the theatre and music scenes there. Does anyone know of any sessions at any of the pubs? I've heard there's one on Friday's at Erin's, but that's all I know so far. Would love to get some nature while I'm out of New York...a wee bit of hiking or something. I'm basically a big music-obsessed artsy tree-hugging Celtophile geek, if that and maybe my UserInfo page gives you any ideas of what I should check out while I'm there. Other than that...yeah, just want to meet people, experience the culture, the land, the music. :)

Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Amanda in NYC
» Mary Griffith's Night '05
cross posted in newfoundland and mun_swgc and nl_music:

Mary Griffith's Night '05 is being held tommorow (Thursday, March 31st) at 8:00pm at O'Reilly's in St. John's.  It's a benefit concert held in the memory of a former MUN Folklore BA graduate who was killed on her graduation night, before she was able to enter into her MA in Folklore.  The ticket price at the door is $8, or you can purchase tickets at Fred's, or through the Folklore office (4th floor Education building) or $7 in advance.  All funds go towards a bursary given to an undergraduate/graduate student to subsidize fieldwork related to Newfoundland folklore.  It will be a night of traditional musicians and performers, many of whom are folklore students or professors!  Hope to see some of you there.

» Mary Griffiths Memorial Bursary Benefit Concert
Cross-posted in mun_swgc, nfmusic and newfoundland, sorry for everyone who has to read it multiple times.

The 13th Annual Mary Griffiths Memorial Bursary Benefit Concert is taking place in Bridie Molloy's on George Street on Thursday, March 25th, 2004 at 8:00pm. I am not positive, but I think it's open to all ages and costs $5.00 for cover, if I recall correctly!

This concert is organized and proceeds contribute to the Mary Griffiths Bursary Award for Folklore Fieldword and there will be a lot of great Newfoundland/Folk bands/singers playing throughout the evening, including: Arthur O'Brien, the Peter Narvarez Trio, Horizon and the Auntie Crae Band (among others).

Thanks for your interest, and hope to see you there!
